Review of Chicken Little (2005) by Jacob B — 14 Jun 2018
While Disney has shown they're capable of making CGI movies without Pixar's input, their first movie did not start that way. In Chicken Little, Disney's first fully CGI movie, Disney tried to make a DreamWorks movie.
It didn't work. The movie is extremely mean-spirited. The entire town treats a child like a burden on society for a simple mistake...and the events take place ONE YEAR after said incident when, as with many fads, it would lose relevance as people move on to make fun of something else.
They even went as far as to make a movie out of him. The animation looks extremely outdated. And this movie came out in 2005. Okay, it came out the same year as the better non-Shrek fairy-tale parody, Hoodwinked! which also had terrible CGI but not only did the latter have the excuse of being independtly funded making it inexpensive but that movie had a much more appealing art style than this movie.
The animation feels so...textureless. It's also overdosed with pop-culture references because Disney didn't understand what Katzenberg did to make Shrek great. By the way, it should be noted that this movie only exists because Michael Eisner wanted to spite Katzenberg.
And this world is really inconsistent. It apparently takes place on Earth and live-action movies exist in this world and they even straight up mention Barbra Streisand in one scene as a crappy throwaway gag.
Is it like Cars where the animals became anthropomorphic and murdered all the humans? That would make for a much better movie. Does this movie have good qualities? Surprisingly, yes. The voice acting is not bad despite none of the adults even trying to sound like 12-year-olds, some of the jokes made me laugh, the ending is actually decent, the premise doesn't sound that bad and Chicken Little himself is likable.
But the movie tries to so hard to have cynical, edgy humour and is packed with so many unlikable characters that I actually wanted the aliens to vaporize the townsfolk as karma. Disney would realize its mistake soon.
But stay away from this rotten, clucked-up egg.
