Review of Chicago (2002) by Neil K — 27 Jan 2012
Musicals almost never translate to the big screen with any of their original spark intact. 'Chicago' proves to be the exception by successfully balancing big-budget moviemaking with small-town theatre attitude.
Everything has been tailored to fit the screen without maligning the energy of the performances or story structure. First-rate performances, photography, choreography, costumes, set design all seamlessly collaborate to migrate the original material from one medium to another, leaving the audience wanting more.
Future musical filmmakers should pay attention to the lessons presented by 'Chicago' as a starting point for their work. Recommended.
