Review of Chicago (1927) by Zbigniew Z — 30 Dec 2011
Behold the weakest Academy Award Best Picture winner that I have seen. It's no great surprise that I wasn't blown away by this film because Chicago the show just isn't my thing. I appreciate that this may well be well choreographed, I wouldn't know, I really don't do show-tunes and it is difficult to judge how well Zellweger and Zeta-Jones are performing when I simply don't like the songs.
It's not that I'm against musicals (although in the past I may have been of that mind), I recently watched The Sound of Music and I loved it and Little Shop of Horrors is a favourite of mine which I have seen on stage as well and Les Miserables on stage is mesmerising.
In short this seems way too specific to be film that would even contend for an Oscar, it's certainly not one that I will be revisiting. My vote would have gone to The Pianist.
