Review of Chicago (1927) by Matty S — 06 Dec 2013
There are a few solid musical numbers featured in Rob Marshall's Oscar winning film, but most of the time I found myself frustrated by the MTV-style editing that steal our attention away from the dancing.
In addition, the opening and title number is so chopped up for story that Zeta-Jones performance gets lost. The other issue I had with this film is that it feels like Marshall attempts to steal everything that was great about Fosse's film adaptation of his own CABARET and turns it into everything bad about CHICAGO.
The play upon which this film is based has story, but it was really about the dancing and the music. Marshall is trying to turn it into a film more about the story and less about the music and the dancing.
It did not work for me.
