Review of Chi-Raq (2015) by Johnny M — 10 Dec 2015
'Chi-Raq' is Spike Lee's best movie in ages despite it's sometime lack of focus. This controversial drama is all over the place but most of it is strong. The dialogue is beautiful and poetic and even sometimes powerful.
The sing song rhythm and rhyme of the dialogue flows fluidly. Strong performances, especially Angela Bassett, John Cusack, his best work in a decade, and Jennifer Hudson make the movie that much stronger.
There are very emotional highs and a free-for-all, original spirit that I appreciated. The people slamming this before seeing the movie are foolish because this is not supposed to be a serious expose of gun violence in Chicago.
'Chi-Raq isn't trying to be that, the crime is that those people hating on this ignore serious movies about Chicago gun violence like 'The Interrupters'.
