Review of Cheyenne Autumn (1964) by John A — 30 Jan 2009
An enjoyable, humanist portrait of the Cheyenne from Ford. This film contains some of the most beautiful shots of Ford's career--some of the sequences seem painterly even. In that sense, the film is a real treat to look at.
Widmark's world weary cavalry officer offers the film some complexity, for though the film is about the Cheyenne's trek north to their homeland, Widmark is the central character, narrating the action as we go.
A solid final western for the master of them.
