Review of Cherrybomb (2009) by Tara S — 24 Aug 2010
When Michelle comes into the lives of Malachy and Luke, both boys begin to compete for her affections, which leads them down a path none of them expected. Cherrybomb is quite an engaging film about teenagers in Northern Ireland which gets down to the grittiness of their situations rather than have all the long passages of talk some film like to have.
The big name in the film is Rupert Grint, who is known for his Ron Weasley role in the Harry Potter franchise. He puts Ron to one side and delivers a great performance which is very adult and shows he has a great future outside the franchise.
I liked his realistic and touching performance and showed a great range to his acting which we have only seen a little of before. Sheehan was good as the troubled Luke and had a good chemistry with all the actors.
Nixon and Nesbitt I found not as convincing as the others. Nixon does have some good moments but not enough for me. Nesbitt didn't seem to know how to play his part, or maybe the character wasn't as developed as the others.
Overall, it was a good film, with two good leads giving great performances.
