Review of Cherish (2002) by Alissa F — 13 Apr 2004
Ginger Snaps is a fabulously fun horror movie, campy, creepy, classic b-movie cinema. It's a fresh take on the werewolf story. A good triple creep show would be Ginger Snaps, May, and Cherish, (I think Angela Bettis and Robin Tunney should be in something together).
I first saw Ginger Snaps about a year ago and loved it. I rented it again when Ginger Snaps 2 Unleashed was released. The first is still a great horror movie. The second movie is, typically, another story.
The first 25 minutes drag on. Then there is a long boring "I have to get out of the psych ward" bit. One of the best really creepy parts of the first movie is Mimi Rogers, who isn't in the second.
They should have done something with the statement the mom, Rogers, made about setting fire to house leaving the rest of the family behind. They also should have done more with Ghost's comic book story line (assuming Ghost's character should be in the story at all).
There is no real interest or suspense in Brigitte's transformation because the second movie does nothing with it that wasn't done better in the first. The writing in Ginger Snaps 2 doesn't take advantage of any of the interesting plot points that it had available to it.
There's a werewolf out there wanting to mate, run! It's not nearly enough to make GS2 fun or scary.
