Excellent period piece with a magnificent performance by Michelle Pfeiffer (who should snag an Oscar nod). Kathy Bates provides solid support with a good performance from Rupert Friend as the love interest.
The two things I didn't like where the narrator (though it didn't bother me) and some of the underscoring in the film. At times it sounded like it was a horror movie rather than a romance/drama.
But overall excellent!
