Review of Chéri (2009) by Manny C — 04 Jul 2009
Michelle Pfeiffer re-unites with her Dangerous Liasons director Stephen Frears for this lively and sexy tale of cougar love from a story by novelist Colette.
Even at 50 Pfeiffer has lost none of radiant beauty. Here she plays Lea, a retired courtesan in early 1900's Paris who falls for a 19 year old youth named Cheri (Rupert Friend). What they feel is genuine but because of the potential for scandal, Lea allows herself to lose him to an arranged marriage, and is forever scarred by it. Pfeiffer and young Friend work wonders, and Kathy Bates turns in a excellent performance as Cheri's mother. It's also great to see Pfeiffer in respectable roles, here's hoping she gets back on top.
