Review of Chéri (2009) by Jackie K — 08 Jul 2009
A beautifully shot movie, designed with exquisite taste and very good historic accuracy in regards to colors, fabrics, shapes and cuts.
Good performances overall, Michelle Pfeiffer strikingly beautiful, needed to be a bit more blasé to convey the attitude a courtesan would have had towards her life and circumstances at the time.
Kathy Bates is great to watch in a performance well reined in by Stephen Frears.
Rupert Friend tries hard to be Chéri but I am not sure he truly understood the mood and motivations of his character.
The script seems populated by words that were too modern for the epoch, giving the adaptation by Christopher Hampton a tone at times too "didactic".
Another wonderful score by Alexandre Desplat highlighting the emotions in a really excellent manner.
All in all a very good time at the movies, perfect for that odd afternoon...
