Review of Chéri (2009) by Eddie M — 21 Jul 2009
With all the unfilmed original ideas floating across producer's desks, once again they take the safe route and film another French novel written by Christopher Hampton, directed by Stephen Frears, and with Michelle Pfeiffer in the cast (all previously worked on Dangerous Liaisons).
The costumes are very beautiful and colored in accordance with the characters, Michelle Pfeiffer gives another good performance as an aging courtesan, but the narration is used to keep the film short, the story is a Americanized French novel a vague sense of romance with all the erotic heat excised, and Quentin Crisp shows up as one of the courtesans even though he's been dead for four years.
Anyway, if you really want to see Cheri, you can put it in your Netflix queue and wait for the DVD release, or rent another any other movie about a famous French courtesan who gets more than she bargained for from her newest client.
