Review of Chéri (2009) by Amir G — 30 Jul 2009
Michelle Pfeiffer gives a good performance as a French courtesan bowing out gracefully at the end of a profitable career, but not much else is successfully transferred from the page to the screen in Cheri. The tone is uneven, the comedy too broad (especially Kathy Bates in the early scenes) and Rupert Friend certainly isn't my idea of the titular character.
The film does settle into itself in the final stretches, with the denouement having some resonance, but its too little too late.
Nice production values though - the frocks look great.
