Review of Chéri (2009) by Thomas W — 20 Oct 2009
Michelle Pfeiffer is one of the most engaging 50ish actresses today and Stephen Frears has directed some very good movies including "The Queen." However, "Cheri" is very light and not too highly recommended.
It's not "catty" enough and the dialogue is laughable especially with all the different English accents being spoken. A middle-aged woman falls in love with a young man about 20 and their romance is interrupted by his domineering mother (Kathy Bates in an annoying performance, you want to shut her upt).
She wants him to marry a young, rich girl. The women, you see, are rival prostitutes but we don't see how they practiced their trade or got their riches. I would like the movie better if the screenplay focused on Lea instead of the man who's called "Cheri.
