Review of Chennai Express (2013) by Abhishek S — 08 Aug 2013
Review of CHENNAI EXPRESS.
*** This EXPRESS gets derailed on the way ***.
WHAT'S GOOD :-.
few gags, which makes you actually laugh.
Some one liners.
Deepika Padukone screen presence.
first half pace.
. small twists & turns, here and there.
WHAT'S BAD :-.
stretched 2nd half.
vintage melodrama.
over the top action.
use of too much Tamil language.
forced humor.
music, songs arrival rate & timing.
choreography.
LOO BREAK :- sure, there are songs and some scenes for that. so,if u feel like, then why not..!!!
SCRIPT ANALYSIS :-.
well, there is a scene in the movie, which most of people must have seen in the trailer,.
Where shah rukh khan says, " meri dictionary mein impossible naam ka word hi nahi hai ".
And deepika answers back..." kahaan se kharidi aesi bakvaas dictionary ".
Rohit Shetty has said too OR conveyed through this script,.
" meri dictionary mein logic naam ka word hi nahi hai ".
And as audience after watching this movie...u will be forced to utter this deepika's question too...
Rohit Shetty and his writing team are following a pattern from their first hit 'GOLMAAL'.
Which is to make a masala entertainer with full of gags.
And as these gags based on different themes, are coming on some interval,.
Because he can't just let people feel , that they are watching AMERICAN FUNNIEST VIDEO.
So, he and his team always try to stitch these gags together or fill those gaps between gags interval, with some story line. Whose standard unfortunately is coming downwards with each movie from his team (with exception like 'singham' , a south remake).
CHENNAI EXPRESS proves it too.... It gets derailed on the way, before reaching final destination, the audience heart.
[...Will not tell actual story here...and then say, so, this is the story & this, this, this happens before climax, now in the end what happens, for that u guys go and watch the movie in the nearest theater.....
Because it's not rocket science requires after that to assume or judge, what is coming next. Why can't these professional critics understand this small thing.
As, I am not professional.
So going to keep the suspense on, about story line.........u guys have fun, if u can...].
PERFORMANCES :-.
Shah rukh khan is good in bits...
Deepika is just 'outstanding'. Accent, expressions, confidence, Comic timing... she has nailed it.
Chemistry between lead pair is good, which keeps this movie going.
MUSIC :- it's not good, not a single song is memorable.
EDITING:-.
it is slack , could have been much tighter... mainly in the 2nd half, when whole the melodrama takes over the screen......
But to the defense of editor, he has not been given too much to play with.....
DIRECTION:-.
Full on Masala like -- action, comedy, drama, songs, the car chases, larger than life big climax and Huge stars.
Rohit Shetty has delivered all of these spices in CHENNAI EXPRESS too, in his own Desi Ishtyle (which I enjoyed very much in Golmaal: Fun Unlimited and in SINGHAM).
The way some scenes are filmed...they look fantastic and make movie's canvas much bigger and beautiful.
Overall, He has managed to pull off his sort of entertainer.but weak story line & screenplay minimizes the fun.
VERDICT:-.
Giving CHENNAI EXPRESS 2 out of 5.
Can say it's a average comedy flick, which provides u fun & laugh...but in bits...And this could have been better, much better...if more work would have done on story and screenplay.
Seems, in the awe of superstars & crowed pullers, film is left alone without soul...
So.... In this festive time....if u want to catch a flick...and u are fond of Rohit Shetty's cinema,.
Go board this train, called CHENNAI EXPRESS and enjoy the ride.
Otherwise...don't even bother to make a move......!!!
