Review of Chef (2014) by Jimmy R — 12 Nov 2015
I would be tempted to say "disappointing" except that would imply that I had higher expectations in the first place (maybe I would have if I took my dad's impressions more seriously). The best part of this movie was the road trip.
Unfortunately, most of the 115 minutes takes place before or after that. The dialogue was a strange combination of earnest/ cheesy and slightly awkward moments...I'm sure it must be significant in some way that the awkward parts were actually the most naturalistic, but that still doesn't mean I'd want to watch them.
I also found all the food porn annoying/ overbearing. Yes, I know it's a movie about a CHEF, but when I watch cooking programs on TV, somehow I don't end up quite as hungry and unfulfilled. I have to be honest and say I can't really imagine recommending this movie to anyone - at least, no one whose taste I particularly respect.
For what it's worth, my husband liked it more than I did. Shrug.
