Review of Chef (2014) by Richard L — 17 Mar 2015
A hilarious exploration of passion, critique, and family. The movie begins with chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau, who also wrote and directed) wanting to try new dishes at the restaurant where he works, but the owner talks him out of it. This leads to a scathing review from a well-known critic and a war of words on Twitter that leads to him quitting his job. As he begins to rebuild his reputation and start following his original dreams as a chef, Casper reconnects with his son and ex-wife while launching a hugely successful food truck.
There is really not much more plot than that, and what makes the movie so enjoyable is the natural-sounding dialogue and charm of many of the characters. Jon Favreau is especially great and his journey with his son hits all the right notes while they reconnect.
Truly a crowd pleasing film.
