Review of Chef (2014) by Dana F — 24 Oct 2015
Never before have I seen a movie that made me so hungry. This movie is the defining film in the food porn genre. "Chef" is Jon Favreau's latest sojourn into independent filmmaking, and this is truly where he belongs.
He's at his finest when writing/directing small, warm, funny movies like this. This movie is the "Swingers" for grown-ups: it's about one guy's journey to personal contentment and self-fulfillment.
.. except now the guy is 40 instead of 20. And happens to be a chef (so it's not just a clever name!). Judging by the volume of A-listers in supporting roles/cameos, Favreau is clearly connected in Hollywood.
The cast in terrific, the writing is great, and the direction is gorgeous. Favreau has really developed his artistic eye, both visually and through the use of music (which is used impeccably to complement the story).
There are many themes explored in the film: family relationships, social media, and most of all, food. But it's not just food porn, it also has a solid story, a healthy dose of wit, and a buttload of heart.
My only complaints are that it's a little too long and sometimes the story is not entirely believable... however, the actors and the writing absolutely sell both the characters and the dialogue, so it doesn't ruin your engagement in the story.
This film is a celebration of culture, family, and food, and it warms you down to the cockles of your heart. Just don't watch it on an empty stomach.
