Review of Cheerleader Camp (1988) by Tans D — 20 Feb 2008
Alison (Betsy Russell), a nightmare plagued teen, is on her way to an overnight cheering camp and competition with her squad. The squad includes a traditionally dumb blonde, the perfectionist slut, the less-memorable girl who is just added for the body count, the "hot" playboy jerk (who really is quite ugly and annoying). the quiet nerdy girl who is constantly picked on, and an obese comedic guy. (Starting to get the picture?) Anyway, soon after they arrive, a girl Alison's boyfriend was flirting with commits suicide, which is quickly ignored by the other girls at the camp as they go to the swimming hole and sleep (apparently there is little to no cheerleading involved in cheerleader camp...) Soon other girls start disappearing, and Alison wonders if she is the one doing the killings. But is she?
This movie was pretty lame. The acting was dull, the characters annoying, and the plot silly. The gore was okay, but only one death was actually shown on screen. The ending was not surprising to me, but it probably was at the time (as an avid horror fan I've seen it all before) and possibly borrowed from the ending of "The Intruder", as the endings are very similar.
The things that really bothered me about this film are as follows:
* The young, attractive camp leader has an on-going affair with the fifty-something sherriff.
*A girl commits suicide and the camp leaders hide her body in the kitchen freezer.
*Alison sees her hideous boyfriend hitting on all of the other girls at the camp and stays with him, letting him emotionally abuse her and cheat on her - I wanted to punch her and him in the face.
* You could never tell if you were in a dream sequence or reality.
* There were only three squads at the competition??
Etc.I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea...
Overall, a dull cheesefest with little action and lots of plot holes, bad dialogue, red herrings, and dumb characters. There are far superior slasher flicks to watch, steer clear of this one.
