Review of Che: Part One (2008) by Angie H — 02 Feb 2010
A deep, emotional and realistic portrayal of a man as interesting and unique as any in history. Soderbergh crafts excellent visuals and a great style around a good script and a well paced story to give the audience the feeling that it really is unraveling before their very eyes, and the detail in every shot adds to our emotional involvement.
Del Toro is absolutely fantastic, really getting to grips with the character and giving him the depth he needed for a film as big as this, and the rest of the cast all perform very well and make you care about each and every one of them.
Does it over romanticise the time, quite possibly, but in truth Soderbergh does his level best to keep it true to the story and true to it's message as much as possible. Part one is excellent, and it even manages something of a happy ending, something I am afraid to say may be shattered when you come to watch part two.
