Review of Che: Part One (2008) by Alun H — 19 Mar 2010
First part of Soderbergh's Che Guevara biopic, which is not so much a biopic, more a portrayal of the run-up to the revolution. Most of the action is in the jungle as Guevara leads his guerillas across Cuba, capturing town after town.
Soderbergh is back in 'Traffic' mode I'm glad to say, and Del Toro's performance is not showy, more collected and measured.
A film like this hinges upon its leading man, and I suppose Del Toro didn't really want to to cock up the role of a lifetime.
Despite knowing the outcome, the final assault is pretty gripping.
Looking forward to part two.
