Review of Chasing Mavericks (2012) by Edwin P — 27 Apr 2013
Michael Apted and Curtis Hanson's "Chasing Mavericks".
** 1/2 (out of four).
The challenge the filmmakers had in telling a surf movie built around the life of Jay Moriarity is to wrap it around a narrative that is both believable and convincing. While "Riding Giants" is still a better surf film, "Chasing Mavericks" captures the energy of the sport. But its coming of age and a kid longing for a father figure story lacks authenticity.
Jonny Weston who plays the surfing icon knows how to surf and may even have the looks. But he is unable to convey the emotional aspects of the story. As a surf movie, it is probably more important to cast someone who is more believable as a surfer than as an actor. But many other newcomers have achieved more on the acting side.
Still, as a family film with a PG rating, it offers some takeaways found in these types of films.
