Review of Chasing Amy (1997) by Jonathan B — 24 Jul 2011
Chasing Amy is Kevin Smith's most acclaimed film of his career and carries with it some truly fantastic performances. Ben Affleck's breakout role remains one of his finest, Jason Lee is great as Jason Lee does, while Joey Lauren Adams excels in a wonderfully complex role, especially for a female character in this genre.
Kevin Smith retains his signature raunchy geek humor but combines it with a surprisingly sophisticated emotional undercurrent, and the fact he did it all on a $250k budget is remarkable. It actually has a lot of interesting stuff to say on the subjects of sex and love, and while I don't agree with everything it suggests, I appreciate its frank honesty, which is pretty rare for a comedy.
