Review of Chasing Amy (1997) by Gregory G — 30 May 2013
Writer-director Kevin Smith's witty romantic comedy provides great insight into the popular culture of comic book artists and their fans; its also one of the smartest, most emotionally honest contemporary movies about modern sexuality and friendships.
Ben Affleck and Jason Lee are best friends and business partners whose friendship is threatened with the arrival of a vivacious lesbian comic book artist, played superbly by the throaty Joey Lauren Adams.
Smith has a distinctive ear for lascivious dialogue that reaches levels of poetry. (There is one terrific semi-parody of "Jaws" where Lee and Adams match sexual scars that parallel Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw matching shark bite scars.
) The second half falters somewhat with a mundane exploration of the Madonna-whore complex. Smith and Jason Mewes appear as their recurring characters Jay and Silent Bob, who offer an anecdote that explains the main theme.
It must be noted that Smith is rather prosaic as a director. With Dwight Ewell, Ethan Suplee, Scott Mosier, Casey Affleck, and Matt Damon.
