Review of Charlie's Angels (2000) by Dave A — 23 Apr 2011
I'll admit it, along with Demoloition Man and Commando, the first Charlie's Angels is one of my guilty film pleasures. It's pure fun, and although reports state Bill Murray and Lucy Liu had fits on set, the cast really do a great job making the whole experience fun and exhilarating.
The women look great, except during the silly slo-mo fighting scenes. Bill Murray and Tim Curry are awesome. When I first saw this movie, I didn't think much of them, but over time I've liked them even more. Crispin Glover is also great as the creepy thin man, simply because he's so weird and obtuse as a villain, it's nice to have such an unconventional baddie.
And then you have the talented Sam Rockwell. He's always bad ass, even here! Kelly Lynch, as his girlfriend/accomplice, is pretty devious as Vivian Wood. Despite a subpar plot, the sheer amount of talent alone make Charlie's Angels a great piece of entertainment. It actually holds up well, and looks even more impressive against the shit coming out in 2011. Go ahead, watch Sucker Punch and tell me Charlie's Angels isn't heaps better! Overall, a combination of talent and interesting characters, plus a super slick soundrack carry this movie. Tons of fun, Bill Murray and sexy women, what's not to like? Bottom line: it's a good time at the movies.
