Review of Charlie Wilson's War (2007) by Megan G — 01 Jul 2009
I really enjoyed this movie. I definitely think it helps that I understood all of the political stuff that was going on, thanks to my poli sci degree as well as a couple of excellent books (read "The Kite Runner" and "Three Cups of Tea" if you need clarification on anything going on in the film). I thought it was a smart, witty, likable film with likable characters, and it's amazing to me that this is a true story that no one knows anything about! I love Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as usual, they are all fantastic. I was happy to see that the screenplay was written by Aaron Sorkin (of The West Wing) and it definitely seemed his style. Overall I really enjoyed this movie.
PS. All of the refugee camp stuff is still going on in Afghanistan and Pakistan, except of course without the Soviets behind it all....read "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortensen if you want to be blown away by how little we are doing to help these people in these countries.
