Review of Charlie Wilson's War (2007) by Brian T — 16 Nov 2009
Brilliant film about a lesser-known congressman (to my generation at least) in the 80's who spearheaded the campaign against the Soviet army in Afghanistan in the 80's. While motives were mixed, to be sure, it's clear Charlie Wilson wanted to do what was best for the Afghan people.
The movie makes no qualms about defending the man and his actions, however, so it may play a biased role in the shaping of one's opinion both of the man and of the events of the film. Nevertheless, the movie promotes a truth, whether real or not, about the beauty of helping someone who can't help themselves, even beyond how it affects one's own interests.
And how some won't just think beyond that point.
