Review of Charlie Wilson's War (2007) by Michael B — 28 May 2010
A much underrated, gone-before-its time movie that was much less remembered than it should have been. The plot is set during the late 70s, early 80s, during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan to help prop up the newly-proclaimed Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
Charlie Wilson is a corrupt, womanizing senator who is transformed into a good guy (for the government, at least) by horror stories of the Soviet occupation. He has a change of heart. He works out a secret deal with the FBI to send weapons to the Afghan Islamic fundamentalists who are fighting the Soviets.
The film accurately predicts what would happen as a result of this: groups like the Taliban running around with equipment from the USSR and USA, the countries with the two strongest armies ever.
