Review of Charlie Wilson's War (2007) by Hunter D — 24 Jan 2011
Aaron Sorkin is a master of making revisionist history fun. CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR, like THE SOCIAL NETWORK, is not a movie that should be taken seriously as a document of fact. But as a bit of liberal American myth-making, it works quite well, the way THE SOCIAL NETWORK plays with facts in order to comment on the very idea of social networking (obviously THE SOCIAL NETWORK is the better film).
Philip Seymour Hoffman steals the show as Gust Avarkotos, the sleaziest CIA agent in the history of movies, though everyone puts on a good show, and Tom Hanks' performance brings him back to his comedic roots.
