Review of Charlie Wilson's War (2007) by Pedro T — 06 Feb 2013
I was definitely surprised by this film, in a good way obviously. Hanks and Hoffman make a great combo and really elevate this film. Roberts is bearable in her limited role though her character could have been equally or better portrayed by a host of other actresses.
The screenplay is witty, punchy and involving, it's not surprising Aaron Sorkin was responsible. The reason this film succeeds where others of a similar nature and plot line fail, is that Charlie Wilson's War is not preachy or patriotic but presents the events (based on a true story and book) in a concise, entertaining and informative manner.
The only time this film borders on sentimentality is the start/ending when Charlie is recognised for his efforts in front of, of course, an American flag. But this is no real issue at all. This film is great and I'd definitely recommend this to people who enjoy political films.
I am slightly biased as a huge Hanks fan but it's refreshing to see a political film like this amongst so many American Ra-Ra movies.
