Review of Charlie St. Cloud (2010) by Johnny T — 01 Mar 2011
A delicate film - not flimsy, but fragile - that holds together on the strength of Efron's physical presence and performance. The byplay between Efron and newcomer Tahan as his brother has a warmth and intimacy that establish the film's tone. The performances carry the film. Religious overtones, however, could make this the rare mainstream feature that connects with the faith-based entertainment market. An adaptation that smooths out the sharp edges of Ben Sherwood's source novel, it's a decent enough vehicle to flaunt Efron's acting chops.
VERDICT: "Full Price" - My second highest rating (Positive to Mixed reaction). This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theater to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent.
