Review of Charlie St. Cloud (2010) by Danny S — 03 Mar 2011
"Charlie St. Cloud" 10 Scale Rating: 4.0 (Bad) ...
Amazingly enough, I actually think that Zac Effron is a solid actor. However, aside from "Me and Orson Welles", I have hated every single one of his films ...
Charlie St. Cloud (played by Effron) has everything going for him. He is popular, does well in school, and has a future as a professional sailboat racer. One night while sneaking out to a party, his little brother guilts him into taking him along. There is a car accident and his little brother is killed. Charlie's life goes into a tailspin, but he can still see the ghost of his little brother who he promises he will always play catch with at sunset. Eventually, Charlie meets a girl who starts to make the ghost of his brother jealous and he must find a way to balance the two.
First of all, the movie attempts a "twist" ending that you can see coming from a mile away. They make what they are trying to pull off so obvious, that you can guess what is going to happen thirty minutes into the film. That wouldn't be a huge deal if the entire movie didn't revolve around this "twist", but since it does the rest of the film is boring and flat.
Like I said, Effron wasn't the problem. He was actually pretty good with the crap script he was given. Kim Bassinger and Ray Liotta also have super small roles, but are as forgettable as the movie itself.
