Review of Charlie Bartlett (2008) by Sam L — 03 Sep 2009
Anton Yelchin in Star Trek is a wonderful treat, & watching him play the lead is a different experience altogether.
Although the show has its ups, Anton Yelchin doesn't have enough experience nor presence to carry the show. He's likeable enough though, as a wonderfully polite & filial boy with a penchant of getting into trouble.
Kat Dennings is another girl who's stuck in no-man's land - pretty enough to be an actress, not pretty nor charismatic enough to be a movie star. She does reasonably well in indie/sleeper films (see Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist), so I guess she's found her niche.
Robert Downey Jr. is his usual awesome here, playing Dennings' pained father.
Overall, it's a story of a boy who can't fit in (yet find all ways to) which is fun & enjoyable, yet not quirky enough to gain cult status like Napolean Dynamite.
