Review of Charlie Bartlett (2008) by Tyler P — 17 Jan 2010
After 25 years of a long gap, director Jon Poll returns with a young comic flick. 'Charlie Bartlett' is a story of a wealthy teenager named Charlie Bartlett (Anton Yelchin) is failing miserably at fitting in at a new public high school run by the world-weary Principal Gardner (Robert Downey Jr).
The kids at Western Summit High have "issues" & Charlie comes as a rescue. As he begins to better understand the social hierarchy, Charlie's honest charm and likability positions him as the resident "psychiatrist" dishing out advice, and the occasional prescription with his partner and fellow student, Murphy Bivens, to other students in need.
Along the way, he decides to take some of his own advice, find romance, and learn to accept who he is. Suddenly, Charlie becomes the hottest man on campus & he is even caught the eye of Gardner's sultry daughter (Kat Dennings).
'Charlie Bartlett' is surely a light comedy, which will surely pass your time, it also deals with various new generation issues like drugs, sex etc. The performances are good, Yelchin in a lead role does a very fine job, though had nothing special.
Downey was delight to watch as Principal, he executed a very natural & amazing performance. Kat looked fine & her performance was okay. The direction is fine, but the movie actually has nothing very much for the viewers to offer.
Nevermind, some light gags & a fair movie. Definitely watchable once.
