Review of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) by Dan H — 25 Jun 2014
Depp's Wonka is too creepy, and he constantly mugs for the camera. He's not all that memorable, though he does shine in some moments. He's also given a bad, and unnecessary backstory. The design of the world inside the chocolate factory is pretty good, and certainly imaginative.
..it's just also a bit scary as well. Everything feels a bit off, and a bit wrong but this is a Tim Burton film. This unnecessary re-imagining clocks in at around 2 hours long, and is ultimately bloated.
I do like that this version is somewhat more faithful to the original source material, and it's certainly still entertaining when it;s not too busy being creepy and weird. Although it's not a classic (and certainly can't hold a candle to the original) I say it's still worth a peek.
