Review of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) by Andy P — 14 Aug 2014
The original 1971 Willy Wonka movie has since garnered a cult following and has become a children's classic. As such it didn't need to be remade. Having said that, this 2005 version gets the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp treatment and isn't simply a remake, it's very much a Burton film.
While it follows the plot of the original movie, and the novel, there are many differences. Such examples include the new and modern Oompa-Loopmas, and Johnny Depp's eccentric protrayal as Wonka, which he based on Michael Jackson.
Is it a good film? It's hard to say. Burton/Depp fans will enjoy it, and I suppose fans of the novel and original film will enjoy it. But there's something about it that's off putting, I can't pin point what it is.
