Review of Charley Varrick (1973) by Jason G — 11 Mar 2009
Holy Hidden gem, Batman!
I had never even HEARD of this movie before a buddy of mine threw it at me last week...(Thanks Ron)...
Really, really well written, well thought out, nicely cast film-noir from the early 70's. Mathau is really great (delivering deadpan the way only Mathau can)... and John Doe Baker is a total scream as hired mob killer "Molly".
The dialogue is a bit stilted in that "70's" kinda way, but the storyline is tight as a drum and if you watch carefully enough... you'll see just how clever the whole thing is in the final analysis.
Go into "70's appreciation mode" to handle the clothing, racism, violence and mysogyny and you'll actually find an entertaining, fun, well-constructed surprise of a film that I personally, really didn't expect to like very much...(largely because I'd never heard of it before).
