Review of Chariots of Fire (1981) by Ryan K — 01 Oct 2010
Chariots of Fire had a lot going for it: A phenomenal true story, good production values and a great score. I also definitely see why this film got its classic status. However, I found the film frightfully dull at several parts during the film.
Also, a sports movie is supposed to get the viewer emotionally involved with the athletes or the people around them or both. I felt there was way too much focus on the mechanics of running and far too little focus and development of the runners and their families.
At the beginning and end of the film there is a funeral for one of the runners, and I felt myself wondering how I could possibly feel anything during the emotional climax of the film. I didn't get to know these people and just as soon as they appeared they were gone again.
I believe it was simple Academy arrogance that prevented Raiders of the Lost Ark from winning in 81.
