Review of Chariots of Fire (1981) by Hassan I — 11 Feb 2012
Hugh Hudson's "Chariots of Fire" is a beautiful sports film that emphasizes on the fact that goals can be achieved. Hudson's direction is spectacular, capturing the intensity and competition displayed through the 1924 Olympics.
Ben Cross delivers a fine performance as a Jew who desperately wants to be accepted by people and Ian Charleson is terrific as a Scotsman trying to succeed. The rest of the cast including Ian Holm and Nigel Havers are good in their roles.
Vangelis' score is the best thing in this film. The music is flat-out fantastic and completely fits the tone and mood of this film. Collin Welland's original screenplay lacks character infrastructure and development, however it is redeemed by qualities listed above.
The pacing is also very slow, but otherwise this is a very well made film that benefits from being low-key and moving. Recommended for anybody interested in the Olympics.
