Review of Chariots of Fire (1981) by Lucas B — 12 Jan 2013
Director Hugh Hudson's thrilling, poignant Oscar-winning drama based on the true story of two members of Britain's 1924 Olympic team, Harold Abrahams, played superbly by Ben Cross, who was a Jew running to prove himself in the face of subtle hostility of the British environment, and Eric Liddell, played brilliantly by the late Ian Charleson who is a deeply religious man who refused to run on the Sabbath.
Magnificently acted by impeccable cast that includes Nigel Havers, Nicholas Farrell, Sir John Gielgud, Alice Krige, Lindsay Anderson, Patrick Magee, Peter Egan, Nigel Davenport, Richard Griffiths, Dennis Christopher, Brad Davis and Ian Holm in an exceptional, scene-stealing, Oscar nominated performance as Abrahams's trainer Sam Mussabini.
An impressive directorial debut for Hugh Hudson, and gorgeous cinematography by David Watkin. The film benefits greatly from Vangelis' extraordinary Oscar winning score that heightens the film's emotional power.
One of the most uplifting and inspirational sports film ever made. Winner of 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture. Highly Recommended.
