Review of Charade (1963) by Lillian G — 16 Mar 2008
There is little to say about a movie that is so perfect. To tell the truth, a person need only look at the credits to know it is going to be perfect. Starting with the script by Peter Stone, the film making by Stanley Donen, the actors that lead you to the top of the list: Mr Grant and Miss Hepburn.. It is a perfect mathematical equation adding up to the perfect movie.
Regina Lampert is one of the great characters created on film because she is so likeable and her flirtations with Peter of the many names are so innocent, yet blatant, that they seem even dirtier than they would in the hands of a true femme fatale.
The complicated storyline is amazingly easy to follow and, it has to be said, all the sixties fashions and music (Mancini!) and cinematography, highlighted by the European locations, enhance the movie into a position of greatness in the film making history.
And the dialogue! Have mercy.
Reggie Lampert: I already know an awful lot of people and until one of them dies I couldn't possibly meet anyone else.
Peter Joshua: Well, if anyone goes on the critical list, let me know.
