Review of Chapter 27 (2007) by Eric On His Fantasy Quest V — 12 Oct 2007
Having gained 70 pounds for the role, Jared Leto's committed performance as Mark David Chapman is impressive, but listening to the character's rambling, monotonous, non-stop voice-over narration makes the scant 80-minute running time feel so much longer.
Films like "Taxi Driver" and "The Assassination of Richard Nixon" have proved that spending an entire story with a disgruntled loser who turns to assassination can be compelling, but there's very little insight into the protagonist's mind here, and just not enough material to support a feature-length film.
The moments building up to the actual assassination of John Lennon (who, in a creepy twist of irony, is played an actor named Mark Lindsay Chapman!) are effective enough, but until then, this highly repetitive film has just felt like it's been killing time.
