Review of Chappie (2015) by Tatsuhito K — 19 Jul 2015
Every filmmaker makes at least one bad movie, and Chappie is Neill Blomkamp's worst film to date. I like movies about artificial intelligence, consciousness, nature vs. nurture as long as they are done right.
This film is not one of them; I blame the marketing people for advertising a completely different film. This is a frustratingly annoying and dull sci-fi drama full of eye-rollingly awful dialogue. It is full of ideas and the robots in the film look seamless, but the story is all over the place, there is no character development, and it fails to fully explore the themes of consciousness.
I hated the gang characters played by Die Antwoord (OH MY GOD, THEY ARE SO ANNOYING!), and the entire film felt like their extended music video full of product placement. Sharlto Copley does his best as Chappie, and nobody rocks mullet better than Hugh Jackman.
But there is nothing particularly memorable or entertaining about this film. Chappie is a missed opportunity.
