Review of Chappie (2015) by Mark P — 05 Jul 2016
What the heck was that?! I don't even know how to react after watching something like that!
Pros: Some of the story bits are fantastic and very imaginative, the cgi is ridiculously well done, and some of the actors give good performances.
Cons: The story is a mess, the bits of greatness are too short and too far between, it's a real shame because the trailer and plot is a great idea, a robot cop gains A.I. and learns how to be a good person, at least that's what I thought the plot was, a mere 5 minutes after Dev Patel's character has the idea to create Chappie, these thugs capture Dev, (I know his character has a name, I just don't care), and steal Chappie, they then go on to be dicks to him, and turn him into a d-bag, so that they may steal some money. There is a scene where Hugh Jackman's character recaptures Chappie and steals his mind chip, and cuts his arm off. The following scene is one of the funniest/worst scenes in the movie, he returns to his gangsta family and they act like he was molested or something, I don't know if I was suppose to take it seriously, because I laughed my butt off. I physically hated Chappie's gangsta family, and they try to make you care, but I didn't. Their all played by a band, and they are not good actors, and I mean that in the nicest of ways. Hugh Jackman's villain was not fully realized, he doesn't have a clear motivation. Sigourney Weaver is just there, she's not bad, but not in it enough to care.
That's what I can say about the entire film, it's a forgettable, mess, of a sci-fi.
