It's certainly not as good as District 9, and considerably less original, but I think it's an interesting spin on the subject, and Chappie is just so bloody loveable that it's hard to hate the movie.
And where else will you ever see Bogan-on-Zef carnage like this? Hey, it's better than Elysium.
