Review of Chappie (2015) by Charlene B — 17 Aug 2015
I find this a heart-warming action with strings of comic relief film. The setting of the movie is the successful use of robots in the field crime control in urban Johannesburg. Creator of those robots is Deon Wilson (Dev Patel) who ultimately created Chappie, a robot with a conscious mind and artificial intelligence but a misadventure happens and it led to put Chappie in wrong side but learning along.
While Chappie is entertaining, funny, heart-warming and action-filled movie, it also a heavily supported by the strong cast performance of Patel, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Ninja, Yolandi Visser and Sharlto Copley.
While some find Ninja and Visser, annoying in their character, it was by the start only and by the end you will appreciate their character has a heart. I don't think Patel and Jackman were wasted in their roles in Chappie.
Patel gave the best performance he could but his character is limiting him, while Jackman was surprisingly an effective antagonist! What I feel wasted is Sigourney Weaver. She is a talented actress and everyone knows her capacity but I blame it to the writing of her character which is limiting.
The story is one we have seen before in other droids and robot movies. It doesn't do something new or innovative to give a fresh look in type of movies which could have been better if experimented or not playing safe.
But the saving part of Chappie's story is the injection of fun comedies and comic relief scenes that will surely capture your humor while being an action flick. Chappie is directed by Neill Blomkamp.
