Review of Chappaquiddick (2018) by Cyndi N — 21 Jul 2018
"Chappaquiddick" steers us back to that tragic July night in 1969 when a car driven by Sen. Edward Kennedy careened off a bridge, killing Mary Jo Kopechne. The fine cast includes Jason Clarke, Kate Mara, and the always riveting Clancy Brown as Robert McNamara.
"Chappaquiddick" is storytelling done well - this compelling movie gets it right. The accident on a small island and its shocking aftermath are understated but eerily realistic. The movie doesn't hide the fact that if Kennedy wasn't so busy saving his good name and reputation, Mary Jo might have been pulled out of that car alive.
The tragedy ruined his presidential aspirations, but it's a bigger tragedy that a young woman died in a murky pond on Chappaquiddick.
