Review of Chaplin (2011) by Alejandro B — 20 Feb 2008
A moving tribute to Charlie Chaplin, I have always found Dickie Attenborough to be an underrated and undervalued Director, this I think is a shame. I think this film does very well in showing the various eras in American history and in Chaplins history.
Whats more I think it gets to the heart of the character by showing his complex's and foibles. Downey Jnr is amazingly good as Chaplin displaying both his amazing comic timing and astonishingly acrobatic athleticism and also displaying a depth of emotion that one can but applaud.
Hopkins is great and Diane Lane is stunning. The Score by John Barry I found to be good especially for it's reuses of the melody from the song "Smile" which I found very affecting. All in all a good, epic, emotional film.
