Review of Chaplin (2011) by Jose M — 08 Nov 2009
A masterful biopic, that is possibly among the best ever made, "Chaplin" is a beautiful film that fully captures the intricacies of a complicated, and remarkably controversial man. Sir Richard Attenborough, who had proven to be a master of the biopic with his masterpiece, Gandhi, once again rises to the occasion, and delivers a film of equally massive power.
The film would not have been as effective as it was, had it not been for the tremendous, arguably legendary performance by Robert Downey, Jr. I will go as far as saying that Downey, Jr's. performance here is among the very best I have ever seen, period.
He buries himself so deeply in the role, that is feels as though we are watching Chaplin himself. He is at times, unrecognizable, and he is ultimately what makes this film unforgetable. The costume design and the sets really capture the regal elegance of vintage Hollywood, and thus add to the wonderful ambience of this magnificent film.
