Review of Chaplin (1992) by Brian M — 26 Jan 2009
I rushed to the theatre when this came out in '92 and was impressed that it stood the test of time some 15yrs on. Absolutely brilliant performance by Downey Jr. without question, stellar direction by Sir Richard, loved the narrative flashbacks and use of Chaplin-isms to create a definitive bio-pic of one of cinema's most endearing and enigmatic artists.
The supporting cast may pale in comparison to Downey Jr. but so did everyone in Charlie's life. My only criticism is that you leave the film not knowing enough about Chaplin and what made him tick, other than a fondness for underage women.
I suppose that was the point so that some mystery remains. If you haven't seen this film, get thee to a blockbuster!
